Why We Started This

I got my first automatic feeder after one too many 5 AM wake-up calls from two very persistent cats. It worked — mostly. But figuring out which feeder to buy took me down a rabbit hole of conflicting Amazon reviews, sponsored blog posts, and spec sheets that told me everything except whether the thing would actually survive a determined cat.

That frustration is why Smart Pet Gear Lab exists. We help pet owners cut through the noise and find smart pet tech that actually works.

At home, I share my space with two cats who serve as enthusiastic (and brutally honest) product testers for feeders, litter boxes, cameras, and anything else that beeps or connects to WiFi. For our dog product coverage — GPS trackers, smart collars, automatic ball launchers — we work with a small network of dog-owning testers who put products through real daily use with real dogs.

  1. Deep research — Product specs, manufacturer claims, firmware history, and real user feedback from multiple sources. We look for patterns, not cherry-picked quotes.
  2. Hands-on testing — Products get tested with real pets in real homes. Cats don’t care about marketing copy, and neither do we.
  3. Honest calls — Every product has trade-offs. We’ll tell you what’s great, what’s mediocre, and what’s a dealbreaker. If a $50 product outperforms a $200 one, we’ll say so.
  4. Regular updates — Prices change, firmware updates ship, new competitors launch. We revisit our content and update recommendations when the landscape shifts.
