Start with fit, then access control—not an overall winner. SureFlap Microchip Pet Door Connect is a candidate for a large cat or small dog whose implanted microchip you want to use for entry. Pawport deserves consideration for a larger existing opening or a configurable new installation. Neither is automatically the right solution for every dog or mixed-pet household.

These are published specifications, not measured performance. A battery maximum does not tell you the runtime in your home; an opening dimension does not establish comfort for your dog’s body shape.
SureFlap Connect: the important entry/exit distinction
The US product page states selective entry—any animal can exit, with the microchip reader on the exterior. App notifications and per-pet activity history should not be confused with individual permission to leave the home.
That difference can rule the door out before you consider price. If one cat must stay indoors while another animal uses the opening, obtain an explicit answer about that exact requirement. A general lock or curfew is not the same as independently controlling each pet’s exit.
The manufacturer says the Hub links the door to the internet and plugs into a spare port on the home router. Budget for the Hub, batteries and any installation accessories; do not assume the door itself connects directly to Wi-Fi. App functions include remote locking, notifications and curfew settings.
Consider it when: your pet fits the opening, its microchip is compatible, and selective entry plus the available curfew controls solve your problem.
Pause when: your dog needs a larger opening, you need verified selective exit, or your installation cannot accommodate the necessary cutout and frame.
Search Amazon for the exact SureFlap Pet Door Connect model. Check whether a listing includes the Hub; similarly named cat-door and pet-door versions should not be treated as identical.
Pawport: separate retrofit from a complete new system
Pawport advertises retrofit mounting over an existing door as well as complete systems. The starting door price is not necessarily the installed price for a new wall or glass opening.
Its size guide lists three opening heights but a common width. For a retrofit, measure the clear opening already present: installing a larger unit over a small tunnel does not enlarge the tunnel. For a new system, choose compatible components in the same size and check the step-over height as well as the pet’s width and height.
The site advertises a free Smart Pet Tag with a door purchase when checked on October 14. Confirm the actual cart and any additional tags you need. The product configurator includes plug-in power, while backup battery options are separate.
Pawport displays Alexa, Google and Siri branding and describes app schedules, notifications and activity tracking. That does not establish native HomeKit compatibility, a specific automation capability or what continues to work offline. Ask for the current setup documentation before buying for a must-have integration.
Consider it when: you need to automate an existing larger opening and the manufacturer confirms fit, mounting and power arrangements.
Pause when: the decision depends on absolute wildlife exclusion, an unverified integration or an assumed power-failure behavior.

Security is a question to investigate, not a badge to trust
Microchip recognition helps distinguish registered pets from other animals; it does not establish resistance to every physical attack. Motorized locks and metal construction likewise do not prove that wildlife can never enter.
We have not independently tested either door for forced entry, weather sealing or reliability. Ask the manufacturer about your particular wildlife concern and installation. Also consider the yard outside the door: controlled access through the house wall does not itself create a secure outdoor enclosure.
Avoid an installation that puts the pet in reach of traffic, hazards or an inadequately enclosed area simply because the door is marketed as smart.
A pre-purchase checklist that prevents expensive mistakes
- Measure the pet and clear passage. Include body width, usable opening height and step-over height. Check all pets sharing the door.
- Write down the access rule. “Only registered pets may enter” is different from “this pet may leave, but that one must remain inside.”
- Check the installation surface. Confirm support for your door, wall or glass and what adapters or professional work are required.
- Map power and connectivity. Locate the outlet or router connection, and ask separately about battery operation and app operation during outages.
- Compare complete carts in USD. Include hubs, tags, tunnels, batteries and installation rather than just the headline door price.
- Read return and warranty conditions before cutting anything. A product return may not undo changes to a wall or door.
- Introduce the pet gradually. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and supervise early use; do not force a frightened animal through a moving panel.

For a fitting small pet, investigate SureFlap Connect’s microchip compatibility and selective-entry limitations first. For a larger opening, investigate Pawport’s actual configuration and mounting requirements. If neither satisfies your access rule, keep looking rather than compromising a safety-critical requirement for an app feature.
There is no defensible universal winner from the evidence reviewed here. There is, however, a clear way to avoid buying the wrong door: resolve fit, entry/exit permissions and the complete installation cost before comparing convenience features.
