With Whistle shutting down in August 2025 after Tractive acquired them, the GPS dog tracker market is now effectively a two-horse race: Tractive and Fi. Both offer live GPS tracking, virtual fences, health monitoring, and activity tracking — but they take very different approaches.

We dug into the specs, real-world reviews, and user reports to compare them head-to-head. Here’s the honest breakdown.

GPS Tracking: Tractive Wins Clearly

This is the core job of a GPS tracker, and Tractive beats Fi by a wide margin on tracking accuracy and frequency.

Tractive’s live mode updates every 2–3 seconds — you can watch your dog move in near-real-time on a map. It uses GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo satellite systems and connects through multiple cellular carriers, which means it works in more areas with fewer dead zones.

Fi’s standard tracking updates every 60 seconds — good enough for general location, but if your dog is actively running, that’s a lot of ground between updates. Fi uses AT&T’s LTE-M network exclusively, which is a real problem if AT&T coverage is weak in your area.

In testing by multiple reviewers, Tractive consistently provided more accurate location data and triggered geofence alerts faster than Fi. When dogs left their safe zone, Tractive notified owners within seconds; Fi sometimes took minutes.

For the core tracking job, Tractive GPS Dog 6 is the clear choice.

Battery Life: Fi Wins by a Landslide

If you don’t want to charge your dog’s collar every week, Fi’s battery life is extraordinary. Fi Series 3+ can go 2–3 months on a single charge in daily tracking mode. Even with frequent live tracking, users report 3–4 weeks.

Tractive’s battery lasts 5–7 days in standard mode and as little as 2 days if you use live tracking frequently. That means weekly charging, which means remembering to take it off, charge it, and put it back on.

This isn’t a minor difference — it’s the single biggest practical consideration for most dog owners. If you travel for a week and leave your dog with a sitter, Tractive might die before you get home. Fi will still be running.

The Fi Series 3+ is worth considering for battery alone.

Health Monitoring: Different Approaches

Tractive added vital signs monitoring in its latest generation:

  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Respiratory rate tracking
  • Bark detection and monitoring
  • Activity and sleep tracking
  • Wellness score and trends

Fi takes an AI-powered approach:

  • Step counting and activity goals
  • Sleep tracking with quality scoring
  • AI behaviour detection (spots changes in patterns)
  • Apple Watch integration (unique to Fi)
  • Community activity leaderboards

Neither replaces a vet visit, but Tractive’s vital sign monitoring is more medically relevant — heart rate and respiratory changes can indicate early signs of health issues. Fi’s AI behaviour detection is clever but more of a wellness indicator than a health tool.

Subscription Costs: Both Require One

Neither tracker works without a paid subscription. This is where the long-term cost matters:

Tractive:

  • Monthly: ~$13 CAD/month
  • 1 year: ~$8 CAD/month
  • 2 years: ~$6.50 CAD/month

Fi:

  • Monthly: $16 USD/month ($22 CAD)
  • 6 months: ~$12 USD/month
  • 1 year: $8 USD/month ($11 CAD)
  • 2 years: $6 USD/month ($8 CAD)

Over 2 years with annual plans:

DeviceSubscription (2 yr)Total
Tractive$70$192~$262 CAD
Fi$150$264~$414 CAD

Tractive is significantly cheaper over the long run, even before accounting for the exchange rate on Fi’s USD pricing.

The Whistle Question: What Happened?

If you’re wondering about Whistle — it’s gone. Tractive acquired Whistle from Mars Petcare in July 2025 and shut down the Whistle platform on August 31, 2025. All Whistle devices stopped working. Tractive offered free replacements to existing Whistle customers, but the brand no longer exists as a standalone product.

This matters for one reason: if you’re reading older comparison articles that include Whistle, ignore the Whistle sections. The information is outdated and the product is discontinued.

Collar Design: Fundamentally Different

Tractive is a small module that clips onto any existing collar. This is great because:

  • Your dog keeps their current collar
  • You can swap it between dogs or collars easily
  • If the tracker breaks, you don’t need a new collar

Fi is an integrated collar system — the tracker module slides into a purpose-built collar band. This means:

  • Cleaner look (no dangling module)
  • More secure attachment (the module can’t fall off)
  • You need to buy Fi’s collar bands (extra cost)
  • Your dog wears Fi’s collar instead of whatever they had before

Most dog owners prefer Tractive’s approach for flexibility, but Fi’s integrated design does look better and feels more secure.

International Coverage

If you ever travel with your dog — or live near the Canadian border — this matters:

  • Tractive: Works in 175+ countries with multi-carrier roaming
  • Fi: US and Canada only, AT&T network only

For Canadians near the border or anyone who travels internationally with their dog, Tractive’s global coverage is a significant advantage.

Our Verdict

Choose Tractive if:

  • GPS accuracy and real-time tracking are your top priority
  • You want lower total cost of ownership
  • You travel internationally with your dog
  • You want vital signs monitoring (heart rate, respiratory)
  • AT&T coverage is poor in your area

Choose Fi Series 3+ if:

  • Battery life is your top priority (months vs. days)
  • You want Apple Watch integration
  • You prefer an integrated collar design
  • You rarely need real-time live tracking
  • Your dog is smaller and the lighter module matters

For most Canadian dog owners, Tractive is the better overall value. Better GPS tracking (the whole point), lower cost, and global coverage. The battery life tradeoff is real, but weekly charging is a minor inconvenience compared to not being able to find your dog quickly when it counts.

That said, if you’ve ever had a GPS tracker die at the worst possible moment, Fi’s months-long battery life is hard to argue with. Know your priorities and choose accordingly.
